About

The National Control team is responsible for the overall control of the power system in the country - the high voltage grid. They have to ensure compliance with the Operating Regulations for High Voltage Systems and any other Act of Parliament pertaining to Factories, Electrical systems, and the safety of personnel. They also control the import and export of electricity from and to South Africa?s power utility, Eskom.

National Control has a ?special eye? through the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system, the SCADA, watching over the country?s transmission network. This enables a System Controller to pick up problems before or when they arise and to take necessary steps in time. All forms of telecommunication are also very important for the operations of the National Control staff. National Control staff works a four-cycle shift of eight hours per shift. One shift consists of three people, a System Controller and two Assistant System Controllers. The System Controller, with the help of one of the Assistant System Controllers, is tasked with issuing instructions for all operating on the power system, and for the loading of power stations for control of power flow, voltages and frequency.
