About

The Swakopmund museum was founded in 1951 and its objectives are to encourage informal education, to stimulate interest in the sciences and to preserve historically valuable items for future generations. The museum is located in the Imperial Customs House (Kaiserliches Hauptzolaampt).

Exhibits at the museum include displays of the contrating life in the Namib Desert and the Atlantic ocean depicted by various dioramas displaying the seals at Cape Cross, bird life in the coastal region of the country and a desert scenes. There are mineral displays which contain amazing specimens especially from the mines in Tsumeb. There are relics of wooden ships that came ashore from the Skeleton coast, an original ox-wagon which operated between Grootfontein and Angola and many more.
