Situated in eastern extremity of the Caprivi Strip the Mamili National Park protects a 320 km network of channels riverine islands oxbow lagoons and reed beds. Mamili is one of Namibia’s birding hotspots. More than 400 bird species have been recorded in the park among them slaty egrets, Hartlaub’s babblers, greater swamp-warblers, cisticolas and swamp boubous. Two large islands in the Kwando and Linyanti river system Nkasa and Lupala characterize Namibia’s largest wetland area with conservation status. The islands can be reached by road during the dry season. During the rainy season 80 of the area is flooded and the islands are cut off from the mainland.
