Executive Director

Ongava Research Centre (ORC) is looking to appoint an Executive Director. This is a full-time
position, based on Ongava Game Reserve in Namibia, and will coincide with the construction
of a new research facility at our Andersson’s Camp. The appointment will be for 3 years in the
first instance, with opportunities for extension.

The scope of the position includes:
• Developing ORC research and conservation strategies in collaboration with the Research
Director.
• Managing the day-to-day running of the research centre, including overseeing technical and
support staff, and managing budgets.
• Establishing, implementing and guiding research, education and training programs relevant
to Ongava Research Center priorities.
• Supervising projects and coordinating researchers to continue and expand current research
projects in genetics and monitoring.
• Working with the ORC board, advisors and Ongava Directors to fund ORC programs and
annual operating costs.
• Providing and maintaining exhibition materials relevant to ORC research and broader
conservation issues for Ongava’s visitor center.
• Facilitating Ongava guest and visitor access to ORC staff and students, in coordination with
Ongava management.
• Taking responsibility for the development of the guest experience at the visitor centre and
the interaction of visiting researchers with guests - such as through talks - in coordination
with OGR management.
• Establishing collaborations with local and international researchers, donors, academic
institutions and NGOs in support of ORC conservation and research initiatives.
• Facilitating and managing access to Ongava by visiting researchers.
• Supervision of graduate students – ORC anticipates the establishment of two endowments
for local candidates.
• Working with local universities and NGOs to create opportunities for field schools for
students in the biological sciences.
• Working with Ongava and local communities to increase conservation awareness and
initiatives.
• Representing ORC at relevant external conservation organisations (e.g. Namibia’s Large
Carnivore management Forum – LCMAN).

We welcome applications from suitably qualified candidates who will
• Be qualified to PhD level, with a proven research record in a relevant biological discipline.
• Have experience in managing technical staff, and supervising post-graduate students.
• Have experience in conducting fieldwork.

Ideally, candidates will have existing research interests that are relevant to the ecosystems
found on Ongava Game Reserve (see www.orc.com.na)

Candidates must be a Namibian Citizen/Permanent Resident or in
possession of a valid work permit.

Salary will be commensurate with experience. Accommodation and a vehicle for use on the
reserve will be provided. Funds will be available for research equipment and travel. The successful
candidate will report to the board of Ongava Research Centre. The position may be suitable for an
appropriately qualified couple.
