No one seems quite certain why the statue was erected, but some people believe it might commemorate the vast number of kudu who died in the 1897 rinderpest outbreak. A visiting sculptor, Professor Franz Behn of Munich, drew a kudu in the guest book of Mrs. Olga Levinson, President of the Arts Association.
