Campsite Camping and Caravan Self Catering and Cottages
As the name suggests, the NamibRand Family Hideout is geared towards the self-driving, self-catering family and independent traveller, who is given the opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquillity of the NamibRand Nature Reserve in privacy and at their own pace.
The Family Hideout is a refurbished farmhouse, situated on the Reserve on the farm Stellarine. It is accessible in a normal 2x4 vehicle. Our eco-friendly house has solar lights, a solar hot water system, a gas fridge, freezer and stove and barbeque facilities. It is fully equipped for self-catering and can accommodate up to ten people in four bedrooms. The expansive veranda provides ample shaded space for alfresco dining and living. The house is also fully wheelchair-accessible. The pure water running in the modern bathroom and kitchen facilities is pumped from far below the desert’s surface.
The original farm outbuildings and fences have been left in place, allowing guests the opportunity to explore and to a certain extent experience the nostalgia of a bygone farming era in this harsh desert setting.
The Family Hideout also offers three unique campsites situated under grand old camelthorn trees in the dunes, far enough away from the farmhouse and each other so as not to disturb the silence and feeling of solitude. Each campsite is located in its own secluded dune valley, and accommodates one party of up to eight people.Each has its own private and stylish wood and canvas ablution block, containing a solar-heated shower, a flush toilet, hand wash basins and kitchen sink facilities. A barbecue with a grid, as well as a table, running water and solar lighting are also provided per campsite.
Guests at either the house or campsite with a 4x4 vehicle can drive on the demarcated self-drive trail through the vegetated dunes and affording magnificent views. A further attraction is watching game and birdlife coming and going to and from the water-holes close to the farmhouse and the campsites.
The endless sand surrounding the facilities proves to be very popular with children, as does dune-boarding down our “Family Dune” nearby.
